Shaquille Blake has been sentenced to 34 years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder and possession of a firearm in connection with the shooting of rapper Remtrex at MJ’s Bar in Wednesbury.

Remtrex, whose real name is Demehl Thomas, was shot at close range in the early hours of August 13, 2023. He suffered abdominal and arm injuries but survived.

Despite fears that the bullet could have left him unable to walk, he later recovered and even referenced the ordeal in a song. However, Thomas is now serving a prison sentence for leading a county lines drug operation, for which he was convicted last year.

Blake fled to Dubai after the shooting but was arrested nearly a year later after returning to the UK. Detective Chief Inspector Alastair Orencas praised the efforts of the Major Crime Unit in securing his conviction, emphasizing the severity of gun crimes.

Birmingham rapper Remtrex, known for his raw and unfiltered freestyles, gained notoriety with a viral rap recorded while incarcerated at HMP Birmingham. His career has been marked by controversy, blending street narratives with lyrical talent. Since his release, he has spoken about wanting to leave behind a life of crime. However, in his latest mixtape, Conspiracy, he acknowledges his struggles in fully escaping that lifestyle, offering a candid reflection on his journey.

Blake’s associate, Ricardo Mendez, remains at large, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

ACCESS TO THE LAW: Understanding the Crime and Sentencing

As part of our campaign to improve citizens’ access and understanding of UK Criminal law, we will be explaining the relevant UK legislation surrounding any case law relevant to our articles:

Firearms Offences and Sentencing

The use of firearms in criminal acts is among the most serious offences under UK law. The Firearms Act 1968 governs the possession and use of firearms, with severe penalties for those who carry or discharge a weapon unlawfully.

Attempted murder involving a firearm carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Judges consider multiple aggravating factors, including intent, proximity of the shot, and whether the victim suffered life-threatening injuries. Sentencing guidelines reflect the high risk firearms pose to public safety, ensuring lengthy prison terms for those convicted.

In this case, Shaquille Blake received a 34-year sentence after shooting rapper Remtrex at close range inside MJs Bar in Wednesbury. His use of a firearm in a crowded venue demonstrated clear intent to kill, which the court deemed a major aggravating factor.

The severity of Blake’s sentence underscores the justice system’s firm stance on gun crime. Courts impose lengthy prison terms to deter offenders, protect the public, and ensure those who endanger lives with firearms face significant consequences.

Well, that’s all for now. But until our next article, please stay tuned, stay informed, but most of all stay safe, and I’ll see you then.
