Man Arrested After Five Injured in
Croydon Knife Attack
A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm following a violent knife attack in Croydon, south London, which left five men injured. The incident occurred near a Sainsbury's and Argos warehouse on Marlowe Way in Beddington at approximately 10:15
GMT, prompting an urgent response from police and emergency services.
The London Ambulance Service (LAS) confirmed that the victims were taken to various hospitals, with one transported to a major trauma centre. The Metropolitan Police stated that initial investigations suggest all those involved were known to each other, reducing concerns of any wider threat to public safety.
A Frantic Fight to Stop the Attacker
One of the injured men, 29-year-old Joseph Denton from Rayleigh, Essex, described the terrifying ordeal in chilling detail.
"He was stabbing at me like a serial killer,"
Mr Denton said. "He didn't say a word. He was trying to kill me, and l'd never seen him before in my life."
Recounting the chaos, Mr Denton explained how he attempted to confront and subdue the assailant:
"I tried to lock the door, but where I couldn't, I had to just confront him and fight him basically. I got him on the floor and decided to hit him with a fire extinguisher, which sort of calmed everything down."
Mr Denton continued:
"People rushed in because he was on the floor at that point, and we all just carried on attacking him until he left. I didn't really have a choice, to be honest."
He also described the weapon used by the attacker:
"It was literally the size of my face. It was a Rambo knife about eight inches, with all jagged edges."
Emergency Services on the Scene
A significant response was mobilised, with multiple ambulances, fire engines, and helicopters dispatched to the scene. An LAS spokesperson provided further details about the victims:
"One victim was in his 50s, two were in their 30s, and two were in their 20s. We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast-response car, an incident response officer, members of our Tactical Response Unit, and London's Air Ambulance. Our crews treated five patients at the scene before taking one to a London major trauma centre and four to other hospitals."
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the suspect was also arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. He sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police Reassure Public
Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain praised the swift response of officers, stating:
"Officers responded quickly and arrested the suspect within an hour. An investigation is now underway. Based on initial enquiries, we believe all those involved knew each other. Therefore, we do not believe there is any wider risk to the public."
As inquiries continue, the community is left shaken by this act of violence, though reassured by the decisive actions of bystanders and law enforcement alike.
Well, that's all for now. But until our next article, please stay tuned, stay informed, but most of all, stay safe, and l'll see you then.
