Romanian-origin Walsall resident Gabriel Marinoaica has received a six and a half year sentence after he dragged a 15 year old girl out to sea in Bournemouth before raping her. Judge Susan Evans KC described his shocking attack as "a brazen act in broad daylight with many people around."
He raped the child while at the beach with his parents, brother and a friend, on holiday in July, 2021.
The victim had been playing a game of catch with friends when she was targetted. As she approched to retrieve the ball, he engaged her in conversation. He then proceeded to drag the girl, who was unable to swim, away from the crowded beach into deep water where she could not stand up.
He began to sexually assault the girl and ignored her plea of "no, get off me", and proceeded to rape the girl as he covered her mouth to silence her.
She was able to escape when the attacker saw a friend of hers approach.
The victim recounted to friends what had happened and they took her to safety. A report was made to the police and Dorset Police began an investigation.
Marinoaica was arrested in Walsall on Saturday, June 11th, 2023, and later charged.
DNA evidence tied him to the attack.
Sentencing, the judge stated that the relative youth of the Marinaioca at the time of the attack, 18, had obliged her to significantly reduce the length of his sentence. Marinoaica received a six and a half year custodial term.
The victim recounted to the caught how she still sees him in nightmares, and the judge told the convicted man: "You have caused lifelong harm to her."
